RAF CAREERS
Cornwall Athletic Club was established on 1st January 1984.
The Club was formed as a result of the amalgamation of Duchy of Cornwall
Athletic Club and West Cornwall Athletic Club.
The Club meets at Carn Brea Leisure Centre and the main
training evening is Tuesday, beginning at 6.30pm. Training takes place
throughout the year as in the winter the track is floodlit and a range of indoor
facilities are also available.
Cornwall AC offers the full range of
track and field events under the supervision of qualified coaches. There is also
a strong road running section and in the winter cross country is the main form
of competition, although the younger members take part in the
increasingly popular sports hall athletic meetings.
In the summer, the club's main competition is the South West
Track and Field League. CAC won Division One in 2001, after being promoted as
Division Two Champions in 2000. We enter a range of open meetings and organise
team coaches at subsidised rates to these events. In the winter, the Westward
Cross Country League offers six races and Cornwall AC have always emerged as the
top club in the Young Athletes age groups. The road runners are well catered for
and races include the Cornwall Grand Prix Series and the Sweatshop/UK Athletics
Grand Prix Series. The club fixture list gives details of all events.
One of the club's main aims is to ensure that the club's name
and reputation is known and respected beyond Cornwall and the South West. We
therefore encourage teams and individuals to compete in major South of England
and national events. Fourteen CAC athletes have represented England
internationally and the club's youth team won the National Cross Country
Title.
Cornwall AC is a very busy club,
promoting far more events than any other club in the Duchy. In the summer, we
organise the long established Duchy Open and Duchy Minors Meetings. On the road
our Duchy Marathon is Cornwall's oldest road race and we also organise the shorter Christmas
Turkey Trot and Mid Summer Turkey Trot road races from Tricky Dickies at Redruth. The
club's presentation evening in March is always a popular occasion.
Parents are always welcome to become
more involved in the activities of CAC. There are coaching opportunities,
courses for officials, plenty of helpers needed at all our events and a role on
the committee for those interested.

CORNWALL AC MIDDLE DISTANCE TRAINING
There are 3 main groups
covering middle distance events, from 800m to 10,000m as well as cross-country
and road running. Each group is taken by a qualified UK athletics coach and
together cover the age range of 11-70 years !!
The groups are divided accordingly to ability and age : the youngest
caters for boys and girls aged roughly 11 to 15 years, the middle group takes athletes through from around 15 to
20 years and the last group is for seniors and veteran runners.
In addition there is a group for
younger athletes (7-11 years) that introduces them, through fun athletics, to
all the disciplines, so that they can make an informed choice as to what they
wish to concentrate on at a later stage. In all cases the age range is fluid in
order to cover all eventualities.
In general, the groups cater for athletes
of both sexes and all abilities from complete beginners to County level and beyond. The middle group
also includes those who have progressed to higher levels and may include athletes
of International standard. However, everyone is treated as an individual and training sessions
are structured so as to cater for everyone. The aim of
every coach is to make training sessions enjoyable (if hard work). We firmly believe
that if you enjoy what you do, you will be encouraged to continue. Numbers
on a Tuesday evening regularly reach 50 to 60 and if you find you've some
ability as well - who knows !!!
The main training sessions are held every
Tuesday evening at the Carn Brea track, Pool, Redruth. Sessions start at around
6.30 pm and continue until 7.30 pm (youngest age group) or 8.00 pm
(seniors/veterans). In addition beach sessions are held roughly once a month. There are
also outposts for Cornwall AC - the most prominent being that
held weekly at Penzance. Besides these weekly sessions, coaches will be very willing
to provide interested athletes with training schedules covering around 4 weeks at a
time.
The Club competes regularly on the track
(Cornwall and South West League and various Open events and Area and National
Championships) and in the winter over the country (Westward League and National
Championships) as well as road running throughout the year. Several
of the Club's athletes have represented England and/or Great Britain in recent years.
For most of us, however, it is an enjoyable way of keeping
fit, racing from time to time, and having a good social life
(there are regular opportunities for weekends away - Southern & National
Championships etc).
Rest assured that, whatever your ability, you will be most
welcome !!

A good entry for the first of the two race series. Many runners set "personal
bests" in this race.
Thanks to all the helpers who made the evening a success, all the necessary
roles were carried out, from official starter, lap counters, time and number
recorders, track judge and official timekeepers.
The second race in the series will be on Tuesday 22nd July at Carn
Brea, starting again at 7.15 pm.
Thanks to all once again.
